Write a report/memorandum on the Tinker v. Des Moines School District case, discussing what the court's holding tells students about freedom of expression in school.  Discuss how the court's 1969 decision is followed today - or how it has been changed. The reading in our workbooks would be chapter 13 (page 142) through 145, which covers the Tinker case.

As noted in class, we are staying on Chapter Eight in our textbook, giving it a deeper reading, with more new information added from classroom discussion  for the Judicial Branch.

As noted in class, we will review all the Supreme Court cases featured in the book, with notes specifically on those cases.  Also, watch Hip Hughes' video Supreme Court Cases for Dummies: U.S. Review.  Take notes.  Watch as many  as you are able to of the other video tutorials on youTube Lecture Series that feature these first significant cases, as set forth in the textbook.

As noted in class, we are covering Chapters 5, 6, and 7 with reading notes to be turned in.  Remember,  we have already seen much of this information, so we may only be putting new information in our reading notes - at least that's all I will expect to see.  For the 17th, we will have read through Chapter 7, and need to turn in reading notes for all the chapters.

With the timelines having been submitted, we are back in the textbook for a closer examination of the three branches of government.  Chapters 5, 6,and 7 will be given a whole class overview and discussion, though still requiring reading notes to be turned in, after which we will take an in-depth look at the Judicial branch and some important Supreme Court cases.   SUMMARY:  Read Chapter 5 if you have not already done so; Chapter 5 reading notes are not due until Wednesday;  I am missing many Chapter 4, section 2 notes - turn them in if you have not already done so.  Watch some of the recommended YouTube historic lecture series videos! See you Monday.

I have included the most recent copy of the Federal and State actions regarding the timeline process in order that you might learn what new laws or court cases might have come from other classes and affect your situation - such as the new federal law (that pre-empts an earlier federal regulation) placing the due date on the timelines as the first day back from Christmas break (instead of the last day before Christmas break).  This statute was clarified through a Supreme Court Case Nathaniel v. Hubbard, where it was determined that the timeline was due at the end of that class, not at the beginning, as Hubbard had construed it.  Come prepared Monday to discuss the political wrangling that has been evident in those third and fourth period classes. The Birth of a Republic, and Development of American Federalism  Federal Rules:  “European historical timeline at bottom 1 ½” of each poster board, colored blue.  Timeline band will be centered 10 1/4 “ from the top of the poster board. The width of the timeline band is ½”. Theme Bands occur either totally within one group’s timeline segment, or extend to another group’s timeline segment, which would require coordination with the other group. ESTABLISHED THEME/TIMELINE BANDS: European History  (see above specifications) Presidents  (coordinated by the states) Lewis and Clark Expedition - May 14, 1804 – September 23, 1806 Groups according to time frames: 1765 – 1789                                                            1816 - 1841 1790 -1815                                                              1842 – 1867 Recently passed Federal Statutes or Regulations: Color of European historic theme band will be blue. Due date of this timeline shall be the first class day after Christmas Break. (see Supreme Court ruling on challenge that the statute was unconstitutionally vague) Recently passed State Statutes:  Under the States’ rights to pass laws related to the health education and welfare of its citizens, the state of (Fourth Period, 1765 – 1789) has enacted legislation that will allow taping or gluing or otherwise affixing original artwork on to their timeline that was originally printed on another sheet of paper. The State of Fourth Period, 1790 – 1815 has enacted similar legislation. The State of Fourth Period, 1816 – 1841 has enacted similar legislation. The state of Third Period, 1816 – 1841, has enacted similar legislation. The state of Third Period, 1816 – 1841 has enacted legislation that allows them to color their European Historic Timeline any shade, or any combination of shades of blue. The State of Third Period, 1816 – 1841 has enacted legislation that confirms its right to choose the color of the Presidential Theme band within their timeline, and declared that the color in their state shall be a rich yellow. Proposed Constitutional Amendments:  That the 1/2 inch wide time band law be amended to allow for a one inch width.  FAILED.  That the required color of blue for the European Historic Timeline be declared unconstitutional as being a decision that should be left to the individual states as part of a state’s right to pass legislation regarding Health, Education and Welfare of its citizens. FAILED. Rulings from the Supreme Court. States have the right to determine the shape of the dateline/timeline within their own timeline, so long as it has no effect on any other state’s alignment to their required or agreed upon theme bands.     States may collaborate amongst themselves for the placement of continuing theme bands with the approval of the President. Declared that the most recent federal legislation that established the later due date for turning in timelines was unconstitutionally vague as written, and should be construed to mean that it will be due at the end of the first day of class after Christmas break

For Monday, each group member should (this having been already coordinated with your other group members) have at least five events proposed in final written form, as well as five symbols, illustrations, caricatures or other art pieces submitted for their respective timelines. Many of you have already done this work, and if you have, you just need a separate copy to turn in to me on Monday.
